Forensicare referrals for assessment of family violence or sexual offending

Forensicare is a Victorian adult mental health assessment and treatment service. Child protection has a contract with Forensicare to undertake forensic assessments of convicted and alleged sex offenders and perpetrators of family violence.

MOU with the Public Advocate

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been agreed between the Department of Health and Human Services and the Public Advocate, relating to child protection clients with cognitive disabilities.

The MOU establishes collaborative approaches to transition planning for those young people with cognitive disabilities who, upon reaching adulthood and leaving out-of-home care, require a guardian to assist with decision-making.

Working with Children Checks for kinship carers

On 29 November 2016, the Victorian Parliament passed legislation including kinship care as ‘child-related work’ under the Working with Children Act 2005. This change was made following a recommendation by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse that states and territories standardise child-related work. This became law on 1 May 2017 and kinship carers, where child protection has approved the placement, are required to apply for a Working with Children Check.
